Every year we review the Private Dentistry Awards to make sure every detail fulfils our aim of promoting excellence in the private profession. We also check everything to make sure it’s up-to-date and on trend with the latest happenings in the world of private practice. Inevitably, this means several changes occur every year to keep the Private Dentistry Awards at the forefront of the UK dental arena.
Entering the 2013 awards
This year, we will be adding three new categories: Best DCP, Best Scheme for Treatment of Nervous Patients and Best Child Dental Health Initiative.. As a guide, please provide up to 1,000 words on CD or USB for each category, together with any supporting evidence you want to send to add weight to your entry. Digital photographs, video footage, practice marketing materials, and testimonials are all welcome. The judges want to see a true reflection of the high standards your practice or lab offers. Try to ensure your entry captures the character of your practice and what makes it special for patients.

Children are the future and ensuring easy access to quality oral care is a vital tool in ensuring the dental health of the nation. Do you have an innovative, exciting and unique scheme for ensuring that your young patients look forward to attending your practice and receive outstanding service, designed to meet their specific needs?
Do you have a key dental care professional (DCP) without whom your practice would crumble? Explain why they are a crucial member of your practice. You may send as much supporting material as you like, including testimonials from within the practice as well as from your patients.

Do you go the extra mile when it comes to providing fi ve-star customer service? Provide us with patient testimonials to support your entry.
Have you created a stunning new practice that has made signifi cant business progress and has grown as a consequence of your labours? Have you combined design, facilities, equipment and working protocols in a short space of time to create a practice to be admired and envied? Your practice must have opened after 1 January 2012.
This discipline is fast becoming an integral part of many dental practices. Have you incorporated such treatments into your existing practice or have you set up a dedicated stand-alone facility? We seek evidence of high clinical standards with good treatment outcomes. Have you pioneered innovative marketing for the service or prospered through obtaining numerous referrals from a cleverly sourced referral base? Please provide testimonials in support of your entry.
Are you a laboratory that produces superb work to impress your clients and delight their patients? Do you have creativity and flair in abundance – not just in artistry but in business as well? Does your laboratory inspire your technicians, encourage their career development and provide opportunities for advancement? Do your business skills match your technical talents? Provide us with evidence in these areas to support your entry.
Have you been involved in a charity project at home or abroad that has helped your fellow man? Are you focused on more than profit margins? Show us the difference your actions or projects have made to the health and welfare of a community. We seek evidence of tangible benefits from your efforts.
Is your boss an outstanding leader who cares for their team and recognises the needs of the individual while leading by example? Tell us why it is a pleasure to work for your employer and how they inspire your team with their managerial style.
In these difficult times effective marketing can mean the difference between success and failure. Provide us with examples of your innovative, modern multimedia advertising campaigns that reach your target patients using intelligent and cost-effective marketing vehicles.
Is your practice the outstanding example of overall excellence in your region? Practices located in or north of Birmingham should enter the 'north' category, while practices south of Birmingham should enter the South.
The Private Dentistry Awards support the Mouth Cancer Foundation. The Mouth Cancer Foundation is a charity dedicated to the relief of sickness and the promotion and protection of good health among those suffering or at risk of mouth, throat and other head & neck cancers.

Judging the Awards
An independent panel of judges consists of experience and respected dentists, including previous winners and members of the Private Dentistry editorial board will select the winners. The judging panel consists of experienced and respected dentists. David Houston, who has been a principal dentist for over 19 years, chairs the judging panel.
Judging - Stage One
During August the judging panel will study all entries and compile a shortlist for each category. The shortlist will be published in Private Dentistry’s October issue as well as on this website. All entrants will be notified whether or not they have been shortlisted.
The Practice of the Year Award will be chosen by the judges from the other award winners as the most outstanding practice for 2013.
Judging - Stage Two
The judging panel will then re-examine the shortlisted entries at a later date and may call for more information or even request a visit to your practice. Each entry will be examined carefully and the very best entrant will be chosen as the winner. The judges’ decision is final.

David Houston BDS is chairman of the 2012 Private Dentistry Awards. Having qualified from Dundee University in 1985, he has been a principal dentist for 21 years. His practice won the prestigious ITV/BDA Practice of the Millennium Award in 2000. Since then he has written a series of articles for Private Dentistry, for which he sits on the editorial board and Aesthetic Dentistry Today. He was also voted Dentistry Magazines ninth most influential figure in UK dentistry 2007. David is joint principal of the largest ‘single site’ practice in the UK and he owns 2 dental laboratories. He is the retained dentist for ITV television and BBC Radio. Winner of Wow! Awards 2008, Cordent Trust Award 2003 and The Royal Odontochirugical Society of Scotland Award.

Luke started his career in technical dentistry in 1976, and after qualifying took a specialist interest in dental ceramics setting up his own business in 1985. Luke and his team have established themselves as one of the UK's most influential ceramic specialists working out of his state of the art facility in Watford, Herts. He is a founding member of the BACD and was Chairman of the laboratory committee up to November 2007, he remains on the Board of directors at sub-committee level and sits on in Accreditation board of examiners. He is the first Technician to achieve the levels of excellence required to obtain BACD Accreditation. He is a sustaining member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.

Dr Druian is a leader, lecturer and innovator in preventive dentistry and has over 30 years of experience in dentistry. He has a special interest in the field of periodontal disease, cosmetic dentistry and treating halitosis. He is also on the editorial board of “FMC Publications”, and is current Chairman of the “Private Practitioners Group” and involved with the “Alpha Omega” Dental Society. He has been Hon. Secretary of the British Dental Editors Forum for the past 10 years. For the past few years Mervyn has been the principle dentist featured in the “Extreme Makeover UK” programme. He has recently received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the British Dental Bleaching Society at the World Aesthetic Congress in 2011.

Over the past few years Tim has trained hundreds of dentists, doctors therapists, hygienists and registered medical nurses in this field both nationally and internationally. Being a leading authority in cosmetic dentistry Julian is on the Board of Directors for the new British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry and is one of a handful of dentists in the UK that is a sustaining member of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. He has travelled the world attending several courses to learn from the grandmasters of cosmetic dentistry in the States and all over Europe. He works alongside world-renowned dentist to the celebrities, Dr Larry Rosenthal, mentoring other dentists throughout the UK to perfect their skills in smile design and cosmetic dentistry. David is the Clinical Director of Cranmore and was one of the first dentists in Northern Ireland to obtain a Masters Degree in Dental Implantology. Cranmore has been appointed as the Irish Training Facility for the University of Central Lancashire, Institute of Postgraduate Dental Education Masters Programme in Implant Dentistry, with David as Lead Clinical Supervisor. In addition, David is a Tutor on dental implants at the School of Dentistry, Queen’s University Belfast. In 2011 David established the Cranmore Academy which delivers a series of clinical and non-clinical study clubs for dentists. David is on the Board of Directors for the British Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry, whilst being a Mentor and Study Club Facilitator for the International Team for Implantology.

Since qualifying in 1991, Dr Cunningham has developed his practice into a highly successful private cosmetic clinic specializing in advanced cosmetic techniques and attends numerous training courses in order to keep abreast of the many advances in his field of interest. In addition Dr Cunningham has held a teaching post at Glasgow Dental Hospital, supervising and guiding senior students – the dentists of the future. The 2013 awards ceremony and dinner will be held once again at The 5* Hilton Hotel, London situated in the heart of Mayfair overlooking Hyde Park, it provides the perfect location with fabulous views of London. The venue was a huge hit last November and this year you can be assured the Hilton will be glittering in all its glory, an even bigger and brighter event is set for 2013.

The Private Dentistry Awards get bigger and better every year and 2012 saw the largest amount of entries ever submitted, with practices, individuals and laboratories all putting themselves forward for consideration. The new location of the Hilton, Park Lane provided an incredible – and very fitting – setting for a celebration that recognised the best of British Dentistry.
